has been operating for more than 125
years
• 520,000 people will visit the complex this
year
• 25% of visitors are international tourists
• 65% of visitors are from within the
Canterbury region
• Over the past 12 months, the Hanmer
Springs Thermal Pools & Spa has hosted
over 350 school groups
• The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa
was winner of the Best Visitor Attraction
Award in 2004, 2005 and 2006, at the New
Zealand Tourism Awards. It also won the
coveted Distinction Award in 2006 and the
People’s Choice Award in 2002 and 2003.
• The complex is one of the largest employers
in the Hurunui region
• The bore is located just inside the complex
and draws water from a depth of 28
metres
• The thermal water is drawn from the bore
at 52ºC. Heat is extracted using a series of
exchangers to maintain water in the pools at
a temperature of between 32ºC and 42ºC.
• Formerly part of the Queen Mary Hospital,
the pools are on Crown reserve land, but
are owned by the Hurunui District Council.
• Hanmer Springs village has a population of
approximately 1,000
• There are a total of 2,400 beds available in
40 accommodation providers
• There are 39.6km of biking tracks and
56.3km of walking tracks in the area
• There are 30 visitor attractions and 22 cafes
and restaurants in the area
