Hanmer Springs – the real New Zealand – 90 minutes north of Christchurch.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve continues to increase tourism market share and exceed growth targets. In the year to June 2002, the number of international visitors to Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve grew 38%. This compares extremely well with the national growth figure of 4%*.
In the Hurunui region there are at least 30 other attractions that work in partnership with the Thermal Reserve to bring visitors to the area. Of tourists who visit the Hanmer Springs region, 97% visit the Reserve, making the attraction the primary driver of the local visitor industry.
“Without the dynamism of the Thermal Reserve, Hanmer Springs as an area, Hurunui as a district, and Canterbury as a Region, would lose a substantial point of difference,” Darryll Park, Former Chief Executive, Christchurch and Canterbury Marketing.
To meet this growing popularity as a tourist destination, there are 33
accommodation facilities in Hanmer Springs, New Zealand, providing 2064 beds. The area also boasts 40km of biking tracks, 56km of walking tracks for the outdoor enthusiast, as well as 14 restaurants and cafes.
The Thermal Reserve co-ordinates the majority of the joint ventures in the village, is heavily involved in most community events and sponsors many community activities.
The population of the Hanmer Springs village is 660 (2000 census), a 15% increase from 1996.
