A sharp jolt has been felt in North Canterbury.
It was a magnitude 4.1 earthquake, recorded at around 5.20 a.m. Seismologists say it was about 15 kilometres below the surface, and centred 20 kilometres from Hanmer Springs.
An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale shook part of the Bay of Plenty last night. It was felt just after 10 o’clock, and was located 30 kilometres south of Whakatane.
It was at a depth of 80 kilometres. A fair-sized quake was been felt across the bottom of the South Island yesterday afternoon.
Measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, it struck at about eight minutes past midday.
Seismologists say it was located about 80 kilometres southwest of Te Anau, at a depth of 100 kilometres.
