Hanmer Springs News
Christchurch has had a shivery morning at just five degrees, however that temperature is halved by the windchill factor. There has been drizzling rain in the Garden City, with reports of snow further inland at Springfield and Sheffield and sleet at Christchurch International Airport.
Chains are required for motorists on State Highway 73 between Arthur's Pass and Otira and on State Highway 7 between the Hanmer turnoff and Springs Junction. Further snowfalls have been predicted for Dunedin.
MetService says the southern chill is likely to last until the weekend. Leading forecaster Paul Bruce says the rest of the country may just escape the plummeting temperatures. He says most of the cold air is only clipping Southland, Fiordland and southern Otago and not getting much further north than that. Mr Bruce says temperatures in the North Island have been relatively mild and are unlikely to radically change.
