An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale has shaken Hanmer Springs - New Zealand.
The quake at 8:15am was centred 40 kilometres north of Hanmer Springs in Canterbury but there are no reports of any major damage.
The earthquake was 70 kilometres underground and was felt from Southland through to Wellington.
The quake comes as New Zealand prepares for Disaster Awareness Week.
Director of the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management, John Hamilton, says disasters in New Zealand can be unpredictable which is why we need to get ready and be prepared.
"In the last week we have had a volcanic eruption, significant earthquakes and a tsunami advisory," Hamilton says. "Through the year we have had storms, floods and tornadoes. It's time more people got ready."
