Information – Hanmer Springs Hot Springs / Pools
Hanmer Springs – the real New Zealand – 90 minutes north of Christchurch.
The first major redevelopments to the Thermal Reserve were completed in 1992. NZ$1.6 million was spent on upgrading the buildings, landscape and some mechanical aspects of the Hanmer Springs Hot Pools, increasing patronage by 100,000 per annum.
To enhance the experience and develop new and existing markets, more redevelopments to the thermal reserve took place in 1999. This included a complete redesign of the pools and the addition of a children’s area with waterslides and picnic areas, which resulted in 38% increase in turnover and a 15% growth in visitor numbers.
Long term, the Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve / Hot Springs is striving to become an internationally recognised thermal spa complex.
The reserve was one of three finalists in the 1999 and 2000 New Zealand Tourism Awards – best Visitor Attraction and more recently, in 2002, the only South Island finalist in the Visitor Attraction section of the awards.
At the 2002 Tourism Awards, the Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve / Hot Springs was recognised as the public’s favourite finalist with the People’s Choice Award. The annual Tourism Awards recognise leading tourism businesses throughout New Zealand.
